Tools for independent agents

A short, practical list of the tool categories most independent agents end up needing. We only have one affiliate relationship (marked below); every other link goes to the company's official site and earns us nothing.

CRM and lead follow-up

Speed-to-lead and consistent follow-up matter more than the lead source. Most agents use a CRM that can text, email and remind them automatically.

Agency management and comparative raters

Your aggregator or network may already provide a rater or agency management system, so ask before you buy one. Common names include EZLynx and HawkSoft. Canopy Connect helps pull a prospect's current policy details for quoting.

Pre-licensing and continuing education

Check that a course is approved in your state before paying. Well-known providers include Kaplan, ExamFX, A.D. Banker, WebCE and XCEL Solutions.

Errors & omissions (E&O) insurance

Many carriers require proof of E&O before appointing you, and some networks offer group E&O to members, so compare that against buying your own. CalSurance is one administrator of E&O programs for agents.

Leads

Lead vendors such as EverQuote, MediaAlpha and SmartFinancial sell insurance leads. Start with a small budget and track your cost per policy, not cost per lead.
