How to get carrier appointments as a new agent

Based on recurring r/InsuranceAgent threads and published network terms.

  1. Join an aggregator for immediate admitted-market access: First Connect, Firefly Agency, Horizon Agency Systems. One commenter's advice: check "whose name the appointments are actually under."
  2. Use a placement facility without your own appointment: SIAA (Strategic Insurance Agency Alliance) AccessPlus, Combined Agents of America (CAA) CAAIS, Big "I" Alliance Blue (formerly Big I Markets).
  3. Add wholesalers/MGAs for E&S: RT Specialty (Ryan Specialty) (online appointment; needs E&O with at least $1M per occurrence), Pathpoint, Coterie Insurance, Neptune Flood (online signup).
  4. Move to direct codes once you have production, through a network like Ironpeak (formerly The Iroquois Group) or Big "I" Alliance Gold.

What you'll need on hand: licenses, E&O proof, tax ID (RT Specialty requirements).

FAQ

Can a new P&C agent get direct carrier appointments?

It is difficult without a production track record. Most new agents start through an aggregator or network and pursue direct appointments after writing business.

Do wholesalers require production minimums?

Several national wholesalers report no minimum premium for appointment, and some MGAs such as Pathpoint, Coterie and Neptune Flood allow online signup.
